Marianne Brandt: Tea Infuser & Strainer
Tea infuser and strainer, ca. 1924
Marianne Brandt (German, 1893–1983)
Silver and ebony; H. 2 7/8 in. (7.3 cm)
Marianne Brandt was a sculptor and painter and was the first women to join the Bauhaus Metal Workshop in 1924. She studied under artist Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and was influenced by basic geometric forms.
Brandt designed this teapot while she was a student of the Bauhaus in 1924. The materials used were brass, silver and ebony. Brandt stuck with the Bauhaus belief of function over form by using basic geometric shapes. The teapots design features a nondrip spout, built in steamer, off center lid for balance and heat resistant ebony handles. Although this teapot has the aesthetics of being industrial made Brandt made it completely by hand.
